On April 11, 2013 Southfield Public Schools held a press conference in order to announce and explain reforms to 9th grade education in order to help students better transition from middle school to high school.
Reforms Include
- 8th Graders being taught at University High School
- Single Gender Core Classes For 9th Graders
- Mentoring and ACT Classes
- Mandatory Academy Programs in Southfield High School
- 9th Grade Core Classes Being Physically Located Together In Southfield High
- 8th Grade PLAN Testing
- Changes to Curriculum at University High School
- Counselors Who Will Follow a Group of Students Through Their High School Academic Careers
- Having Counselors Stress the Importance of High School Transcripts and Extra-Curricular Activities
- Having Teachers Who Normally Teach Older Students Teaching Younger Students
