April 11, 2013 Southfield 9th Grade High School Transition Reform Press Conference



On April 11, 2013 Southfield Public Schools held a press conference in order to announce and explain reforms to 9th grade education in order to help students better transition from middle school to high school.

Reforms Include
  • 8th Graders being taught at University High School
  • Single Gender Core Classes For 9th Graders
  • Mentoring and ACT Classes
  • Mandatory Academy Programs in Southfield High School
  • 9th Grade Core Classes Being Physically Located Together In Southfield High
  • 8th Grade PLAN Testing
  • Changes to Curriculum at University High School
  • Counselors Who Will Follow a Group of Students Through Their High School  Academic Careers 
  • Having Counselors Stress the Importance of High School Transcripts and Extra-Curricular Activities 
  • Having Teachers Who Normally Teach Older Students Teaching Younger Students
